A metaphysical journey through the world and ideas of Joseph Beuys.
The Underworld
Beuys’s expanded concept of art saw everything as sculpture. For Beuys every single individual was an artist, meaning each one of us is responsible for actively shaping society and the future of the planet. Start your journey to access the extraordinary transformational powers of the underworld…
The Middle World
Proposing a radically different understanding of society, Beuys considered art and creativity to be transformative forces within politics, science, philosophy and economics. For Beuys, art equals capital. Travel through the middle world to build on your creative capital!
The Upper World
Beuys was interested in thinking. However, in his view, restricting oneself to rational intelligence was dangerous. He believed intuition to be a ‘higher form of thought’ and sought to connect with it through his art. Access the upper world to activate your own intuition!
ABOUT Beuys AR
Inspired by Joseph Beuys’s revolutionary approach and futurological thinking, the augmented reality experience Beuys AR connects past, present and future, playfully expanding the discourse around the artist’s ideas and their relevance today.
The starting point of the experience is the city of Düsseldorf, where Beuys lived and worked most of his life. Three chosen locations that were relevant to Beuys will act as departing points for metaphysical journeys to three different worlds - the underworld, the middle world and the upper world - following the Beuys’s interest in shamanism.
As users travel through the experience, they encounter creatures and objects that relate to Beuys’s universe and are invited to engage with political, social and environmental questions posed by the artist. At the end of each experience, users are given a special task intended to give them a sense of empowerment. The vision is to inspire users to become agents of transformation in the real reality, resonating Beuys’s concept of “social sculpture”.
Beuys AR is available both as geolocation-based in Düsseldorf and as a playspace that can be launched anywhere at any time. Currently available for iOS users only.
Users can launch the experience by scanning QR codes available at the following Düsseldorf locations:
The Underworld: Beuys oak tree (Haroldstraße 4)
The Middle World: Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (Grabbeplatz 4)
The Upper World: Kunstakademie (Eiskellerstraße 1)
The experience can also be found and launched anywhere in the world under the following links:
